The search for sustainable properties
As one of the few Hawaii real estate agents specializing in sustainable properties, I got used to the fact that it was a narrow niche of the market, one that generated little attention. Until recently, when the buyers starting calling asking about organic farms, off-grid properties, catchment systems, streams, eco-village situations, etc. Seems that as the country gets more unstable, folks are accelerating their retirement plans and thinking differently. Depending on budgets and how resourceful buyers are, there is a wide range of listings that can meet their needs. Some of the special considerations you may want to think about besides gardens and water: community–can you fit in? Schools for the kids. Which island fits your budget? Do you have friends who will be joining you? What skills do you/your family bring to the situation? How close/far do you need/want to be to hospitals, airports, cities, neighbors? Will you start living there right away or will you want a caretaker? Do you want pesticide free land? Is there a district network of like-minded people? What equipment do you need? Can you rent or trade?
